Council workers vote for strike action
City Hall, Civic Centre, Southampton
The strike vote will be held in the city's Civic Centre
Council workers have voted overwhelmingly for strike action which could cripple key services in Southampton.

Around 500 Unison members gathered on Thursday afternoon in the Above Bar Chrch, Southampton, and voted to reject council budget proposals by 467 to six against.

The action will consist of a one day total strike on Wednesday 19 February, and selective industrial action continuing from Monday 17 February.

The dispute erupted when Southampton City Council announced plans to cut jobs and staff allowances as part of its budget proposals.

'Failed attempt'

Branch Secretary Mike Tucker said: "Today's vote demonstrated how strongly Council workers reject the Councils budget proposals.

"Senior management failed in their attempt to motivate members to attend the meeting to vote for their proposals.

"The Council is now facing the most serious industrial relation case in it's history.

"It is up to Councillors to put forward a budget acceptable to its workforce."

The 2,200 staff involved in the dispute are from all areas of the council and include inspectors, social workers and benefits staff.
