Man recovers in hospital after fire
Jersey General Hospital
The man was suffering the effects of smoke inhalation
A Jersey man is in hospital after trying to put out a fire in the foyer of a block of flats.

Firefighters were called to the Le Marais estate in St Clement at 2330 GMT, where a bed was on fire in the foyer.

A man who attempted to extinguish the fire was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

Firefighters said the incident would have been worse if the lift had been used at the height of the fire, because the lift shaft filled with smoke.

No-one evacuated

And residents as far up as the 12th floor were forced to seal the base of their doors with towels to stop smoke entering their flats.

The fire damaged the foyer walls but did not spread to any other part of the building.

No-one was evacuated during the incident.
