Inquiry after police cell death
Blackpool seafront
The woman came from the Blackpool area
An investigation has begun after a woman died in the cells at Blackpool police station in Lancashire.

The 69-year-old was found collapsed by a civilian detention officer just before 0600 GMT on Thursday.

She had been arrested on Wednesday night on suspicion of drink-driving, following a road accident in St Annes, Lancashire.

The inquiry, which will be led by Detective Superintendent Mick Turner of Lancashire Police, is to be supervised by the Police Complaints Authority.

A police spokeswoman said the woman was discovered at 0550 GMT.

She said: "Paramedics were called but they were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The woman, who was from Blackpool, was arrested at 1830 GMT on Wednesday on suspicion of drink-driving."
