Playground cash award
Children in a playground
Children will be encouraged to get involved in sport
An award of £1.7m has been made to improve playgrounds and recreational areas in Walsall.

Some of the money will also be spent on encouraging local children to get involved in sporting activities.

Research in the area shows a link between a lack of exercise among young people and poor health in later life.

The money is part of £3m given to the West Midlands from the New Opportunities Fund's "fair share" scheme.

The award is tremendous news for people living in the most disadvantaged parts of Walsall

Councillor Ian Shires

Councillor Ian Shires, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council, said the money is a welcome boost.

"The award is tremendous news for people living in the most disadvantaged parts of Walsall", he said.

"It is sure to bring significant benefits to their lives, particularly in helping improve their health and allaying concerns about crime and community safety."

Chief Executive of the New Opportunities Fund, Stephen Dunmore, said: "This scheme will address the needs of the most disadvantaged areas in the West Midlands that have not yet received their fair share of Lottery funding.

"The awards will help improve the quality of local environments by transforming public and green spaces that are important to communities.

"This programme aims to enhance the quality of life of local communities and promote healthier lifestyles", he added.
