All's well for Ulverston drinkers
Pub drinker
Drinkers will be able to make wishes at the well
When a couple decided to refurbish a pub in Cumbria they discovered more than they bargained for.

Ian Moore and wife Sandra are well known in the Ulverston pub trade and have taken on a new venture at the King's Head.

They are refurbishing the pub and were amazed when builders made a surprise discovery.

A small hole in the floor was opened up, and when it was widened further was found to be a 22 feet-deep well.

'Water level'

Mr Moore said: "We dropped a pebble down the hole in the floor and heard it splash.

"It turned out to be the well, which was in perfect condition. It looks like the well is made out of dry stone down to the water level, but we don't know how deep it is after that.

"We are going to have it lit-up and domed over, and will put a collection box there for the local Rotary so people can make wishes."

The renovation has also unearthed tunnels used by smugglers, and an underground area where undertakers kept bodies before burial in years gone by.
