Bad neighbours face jail

Action was taken after complaints from neighbours
A Derby couple have become the first in the city to be subject to antisocial behaviour orders.

George Brailsford, 18, and Deborah Webster, who is in her early 20s, were evicted from a house in Brighton Road at Alvaston after complaints from neighbours about noise, abuse and damage.

The Crime and Disorder Partnership, which includes the police, city council and Derby Homes, was granted a magistrate's order on Wednesday banning the couple from repeating their behaviour anywhere else in Derby.

The pair could face jail if they break the terms of the order.

The councillor for Alvaston, Paul Bayliss, says the action is in the interests of the community.

He said: "What we are trying to do is serve an antisocial behaviour order which will stop them doing what they have been doing in the past, which is things like intimidating neighbours, having loud parties which causes a serious nuisance."

While legislation to bring this sort of order was passed in 1999, it is only recently funds to enforce them have been made available in Derby.

An order will impose restrictions on behaviour, including curfews, a ban on being drunk in public or using abusive language.

If breached, a court can impose a fine but in most cases a custodial sentence is given.
