It is hoped young people will be turned away from drugs
A university student whose remit is to turn young people away from crime has been appointed by Bromsgrove District Council.

Leigh Hipkins, who is an aspiring tennis player, has been made community sports development worker for the town.

The aim of the appointment is to reduce crime - particularly offences involving drugs - and other anti-social behaviour.

Mr Hipkins, 21, who is studying for a sports science degree at University College, Worcester, will be working with young people between the ages of 15 and 19.

Drug use

Cheryl Holder, Bromsgrove's sports development manager, said the appointment was good news for the town.

"Leigh will be going out meeting young people, working with 15 to 19-year-olds, directing them into sport and leisure activities and away from crime and unsocial behaviour," she said.

"We already provide a lot for youngsters in the district when it comes to sport and leisure, but we want more to take advantage of what we have to offer, especially those who without some encouragement would probably drop out altogether."

Money for the programme has come from the government's Community Safety Partnership, which aims to reduce drug use.
