The play is three and a half hours long

Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children has been adapted for the Royal Shakespeare Company at London's Barbican Centre.

Rushdie himself, together with writer-dramatist Simon Reade and theatre director Tim Supple, undertook the project which runs until 23 February.

"One has a suspicion that without Rushdie's involvement, the writers could have been bolder and created a snappier, shorter and less indulgent version", wrote BBC News Online entertainment editor Jackie Finlay.

But what did you think?

Was it a successful attempt? Did Zubin Varla do justice to the role of Saleem?

The acting was, on the whole, excellent - particularly Zubin Varla.

However, I believe that it was simply too difficult a project to stage Midnight's Children. In particular the play lost momentum in the second half, and the interest of the audience was lost.

Nevertheless it was a creditible and ambitious attempt by the RSC.

Much of the acting was undoubtedly exciting. But this was an impossible project, made more so by the evident involvement of the author Salman Rushdie in the dramatisation. A severe editing of the tale from someone unconnected with the novel would have been a good idea.
