The Office
The Office was one of eight BBC award winners
The Office has emerged triumphant at the Broadcast Awards, in a night dominated by the BBC.

Eight of the 16 awards on offer went to the corporation, which scooped best comedy for The Office, best drama for Spooks and best news programme for the Ten O'Clock News.

ITV's Pop Idol won two awards - for new programme and best light entertainment show, while Ideal World took the title of best independent production company.

And best use of new media went to Victoria Real/Endemol UK's Big Brother 3 for Channel 4, while the children's award was won by Granada Kids for CITV's My Parents Are Aliens.

Out of Control
Out of Control took best single drama

The BBC also won best sports programme with its coverage of the women's curling final on BBC One and BBC Two and best popular factual show with What Not To Wear.

The awards, held in London's Grosvenor Hotel on Wednesday, also saw the BBC win in both documentary categories.

BBC One's 9/11 - A Firefighters' Story won in the best single documentary category while the best series award went to The Century of the Self for BBC Two.

In the drama category, BBC Films took best single drama for BBC One's Out of Control.

The programme, which starred former EastEnders actress Tamzin Outhwaite and David Morrissey from Clocking Off, was BBC One's first wholly improvised drama.

It focused on the lives of teenagers sent to a young offenders' institution.
