Experts are confident a weakened chimney at an East Midlands power station is no longer at risk of collapsing.

The large chimney at West Burton Power Station, near the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire border, was in danger of falling onto a nearby chemical store.

Structural engineers were concerned the chimney might collapse following strong winds, sending poisonous fumes over the area.

For a period on Thursday, local people were warned to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Coal-fired station

Experts are now confident the chimney is safe because wind speeds have dropped.

The structure is scheduled for demolition later this year.

The station, operated by the London Power Company, is situated on the River Trent.

The coal-fired power station can produce 2,000 megawatts - enough electricity to meet the needs of about two million people.
