Car and train collide at crossing

The line was closed while debris was cleared

An investigation is under way after a train hit a car on a level crossing as it was pulling out of a Suffolk station.

The crash at Woodbridge Station happened at 0940 GMT on Tuesday at an open crossing with no barriers, which leads to a marina.

The driver of the car, Peter Hill, from Woodbridge.and his wife, who are regular users of the crossing, escaped unharmed.

"I was coming down towards the marina and I idn't hear or see anything and the next thing I knew was a bang and I was shifted off the track by the train."

Debris cleared

Anglia Railways spokeswoman Kerry Howard said no-one on board the train was injured.

"There were 12 people on board.

"The train was pulling out of the station and was only doing 5 mph to 10 mph so it was going very slowly. The train wasn't damaged.

"We know there was no fault on our train and no fault with our driver."

She said the investigation would establish exactly what happened.

Anglia Railways organised a replacement bus service to ferry the passengers to their destinations.

The line was closed briefly while debris from the accident was cleared.
