Surgeons 'disfigured patient's penis'

Dr Agarwal denies serious professional misconduct

A cosmetic surgeon from Greater Manchester left a man's penis shorter and disfigured after an operation to enlarge it went wrong, a tribunal has heard.

Dr Ravi Kant Agarwal's patient, known as Mr A, paid £3,250 for the operation, called the "triple technique dual increase male organ enlargement".

At the time of the operation Dr Agarwal, from Stockport, was advertised as the UK's leading expert in the field, the General Medical Council (GMC) was told on Monday.

Promotional material for the operation promised to increase the length of the penis by up to three inches.

The GMC, sitting in Manchester, heard Dr Agarwal was described as having "unrivalled experience" in carrying out the "unique and exclusive operation".

It was also claimed the operation increased the girth by up to 90% as an added "complement", fulfilling the "unobtainable dream for men to be better endowed".

David Enoch, for the GMC, said the procedure involved fat being taken from areas, such as the stomach, and injected into the shaft of the penis.

'Rarely successful'

He said the length of the male organ was allegedly increased by dividing the suspensory ligament to make it hang lower.

Mr Enoch said: "It hardly ever works. The fat is often absorbed so either there is no improvement or the patient is left with a lumpy and irregular penis."

Dr Agarwal was working in Harley Street, London, and at the Castlefield Clinics in Manchester, when Mr A met him on 2 May 1997.

"Mr A was hooked and on 9 May handed over £3,250 for the procedure that was going to take between 30 minutes and one hour," Mr Enoch said.

After the operation, which actually lasted up to three hours, the patient's penis had not increased in length and was possibly shorter, said Mr Enoch.

Mr Enoch said a further and similar complaint from a Mr B had also been made about Dr Agarwal.
