Extra police drafted in after deaths
Police officers on patrol
High visibility patrols will reassure the community
Extra police officers are being drafted in to patrol the area in Birmingham where two teenage girls were shot dead at a New Year's party.

Latisha Shakespeare, 17, and Charlene Ellis, 18, died outside a hairdressing salon in Birchfield Road on 2 January.

Charlene's twin sister Sophie and 17-year-old Cheryl Shaw were injured.

West Midlands Police says it wants to improve community relations.

Inspector Darren Miles: "strong presence"
Extra officers will patrol Lozells Road, Birchfield Road and Heathfield Road in the Aston area of the city.

The aim is to provide a visual reassurance to the public and to deter offenders from committing crimes.

Inspector Darren Miles said: "We always have provided a strong police presence in the area and we are hoping now to offer that little bit of extra support and reassurance to the community so they feel safer and happier when out in the area."

The additional police presence will be concentrated between 1400 GMT and 2200 GMT.

Businesses in the area think the move will be beneficial.

Shopkeeper Byron Wynters said: "Trade has gone down and people are sceptical about coming in to the area.

"Hopefully the police visibility will help."

On Sunday, a memorial concert for Charlene and Latisha was held at Aston Villa football ground attended by an 8,000-strong crowd.
