A leading musician with a popular Hull band has died after a road accident.

Paul Warhurst, the 39-year-old bass guitarist with The Gargoyles suffered serious head injuries in a collision with a car near Grafton Street.

Mr Warhurst was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary where he died from his injuries on Monday.

The highly-acclaimed band includes former members of the chart-topping Housemartins Hugh Whittaker and Ted Key.

Mr Key, who was in the re-formed band's line up at a sell-out concert at the Adelphi Club recently told BBC News Online: " Paul's death is a tragic loss to the local music scene."

And he added: "I think it's more sad than anything because The Gargoyles had recently reformed and were planning more gigs.

"The other band members are devastated, he was much-loved."

Mr Warhurst is credited with designing and illustrated the sleeve for the Housemartins final single 'There Is Always Something There To Remind Me'.
