Youth in court over OAP rape

The youth appeared at Carlisle Magistrates Court

A teenager has appeared in court charged with the rape of a 92-year-old woman.

The 17-year-old was also charged with burglary and assault when he appeared before magistrates in Carlisle on Monday.

The youth was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on Thursday.

The charges relate to an alleged attack on a 92- year-old woman at her Carlisle home on Friday.

The rape is alleged to have taken place at 0445 GMT in the woman's bedroom.

Police officers were called to her home shortly before 0500 GMT after she pulled a Careline cord for help.

She was then taken to the Cumberland Infirmary.

The 17-year-old was arrested over the weekend.
