Two 19-year-olds and the car's 18-year-old driver died at the scene and a second 18-year-old was taken to Ayr Hospital after sustaining serious leg injuries.

He was said to be in a stable condition.

Police named the three who died as John Devan, 19, and Craig Ganson, 18, of Mossblown, Ayrshire, and 19-year-old James Truesdale, of Annbank, Ayrshire.

Strathclyde Police said that the youths were all travelling in a Ford car which was involved in a collision with a Skoda heading in the opposite direction.

A Vauxhall Nova left the carriageway and crashed nearby.

Two teenagers, aged 18 and 15, who were travelling in the Skoda were taken to Ayr Hospital and later released.

The four occupants of the Vauxhall were uninjured.

Strathclyde Police, which has appealed for witnesses to the accident, said a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
