Shingle shields road
Slapton Sands is a Site of Special Scientific Interest
Twelve-thousand tons of shingle is to be dumped on a south Devon beach on Monday to defend a coast road from storms.
The shingle defences are in addition to a 21-metre buffer strip of boulders, built last year year when the A379 was rebuilt inland. The shingle - at the far ends of the buffer - will form a new natural defence for the road. The movement of the shingle will be monitored and will help provide a long-term solution for the area. The route is a vital link between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth and many local businesses said they suffered when the road was closed. The £20,000 scheme - financed by local authorities - has been approved by the Slapton Line Partnership, which includes English Nature, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Whitley Wildlife Trust, which owns the land.
