Major beach scheme for Redcar
There has been a loss of sand on Redcar beach
A new sea wall has been proposed for Redcar, Teesside, to protect residents and preserve the beach.
The scheme, costing more than £5m, has still to be approved by the government. For years there has been a loss of sand on Redcar beach, with storms washing it away. That has increased the sea's depth and has meant more sea water has been crashing into the wall. Wall strengthening It also allows water underneath the wall's sloping section, undermining the promenade. A scheme to rebuild the wall has been submitted for approval to the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), by Redcar and Cleveland Council. If approved, it is hoped building work could start by the middle of next year. Work would take up to 20 months, and would strengthen the wall's sloping bottom section and rebuild and slightly heighten the vertical part. The Redcar wall runs from Leo's pub to near the Graffenberg Street slipway.
