Chattering for charity
nursery
It may come as a surprise to learn that as many as one in ten children in the UK suffers from some kind of speech or language difficulty.

But there are ways to help them and the charity I Can is running a campaign to draw attention to the problem.

Breakfast's Jane O'Brien was at a nursery in Hampshire.

1 in 10 children in the UK (3 in every classroom) suffers from some form of speech or language difficulty. I Can is the charity that helps these children communicate, working to ensure that their needs are recognised, understood and met.

There is a simple lack of awareness, understanding and support on the ground for children who struggle to communicate. I CAN recognises that these children need an integrated approach, one that brings together specialist speech and language therapy and teaching under one roof.

I Can is mounting a Chatterbox Challenge campaign, this week. it has been working with nurseries across the UK to have pre-school children sponsored to learn and recite a poem, rhyme or song.

So far 1,500 nurseries have signed up to take part, roughly translated, that means 50,000 children will be chattering for charity during challenge week.
