The dead woman's rings were an unusual design

Attempts to identify the body of a woman found on a beach in Fife have been stepped up by police.

The woman's body was discovered in water next to the harbour wall in Kirkcaldy by a member of the public out walking their dog on Saturday afternoon.

Police said the woman was aged between 30 and 40, slim and about 5ft 5in.

She had blue eyes and shoulder length light brown, slightly greying, hair.

She was wearing blue jeans, black ankle-length boots and a black Fornari T-shirt with a red and white floral pattern on the front.

Det Chief Insp Ian Hutton, who is leading the inquiry, revealed the woman had nothing in her possession to identify her.

Police have issued a photo of jewellery worn by the woman when she was found.

Mr Hutton said: "She had nothing in her possession which could have assisted us but we still remain confident that someone will recognise her from her description."

He said he was unsure how long her body been in the water but told how initial estimates suggested she had not been there for long.

The woman was wearing a gold ring featuring two hands holding a heart with a crown on it on her right hand.

Mr Hatton added: "She was also wearing a relatively unusual gold wedding ring with a criss-cross pattern in the centre of the band and a single-stone gold engagement ring.

"Also a white-faced stainless steel Timex Expedition watch with a brown leather strap."
