Historic rail link re-opens
The Royal Albert Bridge
The maintenance work cost about £2m
Restoration work on a historic rail bridge linking Devon and Cornwall has been completed.

The project on the Royal Albert Bridge, which was designed and built Isambard Kingdom Brunel, has cost about £2m.

The work on the bridge was described as "essential" by engineers.

During the closure, bus services replaced train services between Plymouth and Liskeard stations.

As well as improving the track, Network Rail said the maintenance work has restored the bridge to Brunel's original design.

The line was re-opened on Monday morning after some intensive work over the weekend.

New planks which have been laid to support the rails should last at least 25 years.
