Police have raided the Black and White cafe before

Police in Bristol have raided a cafe in the city, uncovering drugs and arresting a man.

Officers from Avon and Somerset police raided the Black and White cafe in the St Pauls area on Friday afternoon.

They say they found a small quantity of crack cocaine at the cafe - which has been raided before on numerous occasions.

The raid comes just days after it was revealed armed officers are patrolling areas of the city following reports a 'turf war' had broken out between rival drug gangs.

Bertram Wilks, proprietor of the Black and White cafe, said: "If they have found crack in here it must have been from someone who has come in.

"But we can't watch everyone who comes in all the time - we can't search everyone."

In 1980, a raid on the Black and White cafe in Grosvenor Road triggered the St Pauls riot.

Armed police are on the streets of Ashley and Lawrence Hill after a number of dealers returned to the city following lengthy spells in jail.

In their absence, yardie gangs have moved into the area, and the rivals are reported to be armed and willing to use guns against each other.

Officers say the armed patrols will continue until the threat of violence subsides.
