Restored city landmark unveiled
Martyrs' Memorial
The Martyrs' Memorial dates back to 1841
A famous Oxford landmark is being officially unveiled following a £150,000 restoration project.

The Martyrs' Memorial in St Giles has been fenced off for years due to safety fears.

The memorial which commemorates the burning of three bishops in the 16th Century was restored last year following a fundraising appeal.

On Tuesday local author Colin Dexter will switch on the new lights that have been installed to illuminate the repaired memorial during an official ceremony.

Oxford Preservation Trust has organised the restoration along with English Heritage and Oxford City Council.

The memorial commemorates the deaths of the Protestant martyrs Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer, burned at the stake in Broad Street.

The monument was erected in 1841 by the Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.
