School scores sporting windfall
A new sports centre will be built
A Glasgow school has been awarded a National Lottery grant of more than £1m to help create a state-of-the-art sports facility.
The centre will be based in the Dennistoun area of the city and will incorporate a dance studio and a fitness suite. The £1.15m grant is the first from the New Opportunities for PE and Sport programme to come to Glasgow. The initiative was launched last March to distribute National Lottery money. Regeneration The new centre will be built later this year at Haghill Primary School. It will also serve nearby the Kennyhill special needs school, as well as the wider community. Indoor facilities will include a multi-purpose sports hall, a fitness suite and a dance studio, as well as changing rooms. An outdoor seven-a-side sports pitch - suitable for a range of activities including football, athletics, volleyball and badminton - will also be built. A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council welcomed the grant and said it would provide a focus for the regeneration of the east end.
