Train crashes in California
About 50 people were on board the commuter train
One person has died after a train crashed into a lorry in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank.
The lorry hit by the train burst into flames on impact and the driver was killed. About 50 people were on board the commuter train at the time of the crash. More than 30 were injured. Paramedics treated most of the injured at the scene, but 12 people were taken to hospital, fire officials said.
Television pictures showed rescue workers smashing windows to get people out of the derailed carriages - one of which was on its side next to the tracks, while the other was lying at right angles to the rails. The train was travelling at 50 mph (80km/h) when it hit the lorry at a level crossing. The arms of the level crossing had gone down and it is thought the driver of the lorry may have been trying to beat the train. Last April, a Metrolink commuter train collided with a freight train in Placentia, southern California, killing two people and injuring more than 200 others. |
