River levels subside in East
Flooding in Bedfordshire
Bedfordshire was badly hit by flooding
The threat of flooding across East Anglia is receding as river levels subside.

But the change in weather produced new problems with snow and ice.

Over the past few days some parts of the region have seen the worst flooding for decades.

The severe flood warning for the River Great Ouse in Bedfordshire has been removed as river levels have subsided, it was reported on Monday morning.

Shin deep

Water levels subsided on Sunday night.

The Environment Agency said the new flood defences had helped protect Bedford.

In Cambridgeshire, residents in Hemingford Grey worked throughout the weekend to protect their houses from the water.

Some parts of Victoria Terrace in the village were shin deep in water.

Two flood warnings remain in force in Northamptonshire on Monday morning - although the threat to property now appears to be receding.

The whole of the Nene Valley between Northampton and Oundle, or the Great Ouse around Brackley is on flood warning.

The stretch from Oundle to Peterborough is on flood watch.

'Horrendous' conditions

The Agency says the peak of the water has passed Bedford, without incident, although the overall impact of the floods has been among the worst in the past two decades.

The Environment Agency estimates about 550 properties across the country have been flooded over the past week.

BBC Weather Centre spokeswoman Penny Tranter said the weather was expected to remain very cold and dry on Monday and Tuesday, with the risk of snow returning on Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Norfolk police described icy road conditions on Saturday night as "horrendous" and gritters were sent out.

Other areas which received snow warnings from the Met Office included Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

For the latest information on flood warnings, the Environment Agency advises people to call Floodline on 0845 988 1188.
