Freezing night as gas supplies fail
Transco engineer
Engineers have worked to restore power
Scores of people living in a Cumbrian town have spent a freezing night after gas supplies were cut off.

Gas engineers have been working to reconnect supplies in Kirby Lonsdale after equipment failed on Sunday.

Initially 800 properties were affected and some had to spend the night without heating or cooking facilities.

Engineers from the firm Transco had been hopeful of restoring all supplies by Sunday night.

But the scale of the job meant many residents had to spend a cold night as temperatures fell to below freezing.

Vulnerable and elderly people were provided with alternative forms of heating.

Transco says it hopes full supplies will be restored on Monday.
