Effort to halt asbestos deaths
New guidelines published on Sunday will aim to cut the number of people in the region dying from asbestos poisoning.

Nearly 1,500 people in the East of England have died from asbestos-related diseases in the last five years - 288 of them in Suffolk.

New regulations mean people in charge of maintenance of work buildings will have to monitor any risk from asbestos.

The figures from the TUC put Suffolk in the 20 worst counties for asbestos deaths, alongside Norfolk and Essex.

Christmas through the ages re-enacted

Christmas through the ages is being recreated at Framlingham Castle on Sunday.

Entertainers will recreate everything from mistletoe to mince pies, taking in the Germanic festival of Yule and the Romans' Saturnalia.

Don Holton from Heuristics, who will help re-enact the ancient celebrations, told BBC Radio Suffolk that Christmas parties have been held at the castle for centuries.

The Pagan, Roman and Christian festivities are being recreated by actors.

Elephant will be named

A new baby elephant at Colchester Zoo will find out its name on Monday.

The zoo has held an online poll to choose a name for the bull calf - the first to be born in captivity there.

A shortlist of seven names was drawn up by zookeepers after the Colchester website received thousands of hits from visitors registering their vote.

Zoo bosses said the elephant will definitely not be named Dave Watts, after a man who nominated his own name and then voted for it 3,000 times in one afternoon.
