The boy is being treated at Newcastle General Hospital
An 11-year-old boy is in hospital after suffering severe head injuries in a road accident.

The incident happened in Workington at 1725 GMT on Saturday.

Police say the boy was in collision with a Toyota van in Salterbeck Road at the junction with Shore Road.

The youngster was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, and then transferred to Newcastle General Hospital.

The driver of the van was not injured in the accident, which left the road closed for three hours.

Anyone who saw the accident is being asked to call police in Workington.
