Teenager girl killed in crash
A 17-year-old girl has been killed and two other people seriously injured after a car was in collision with a telegraph pole near Aberdare.
The incident happened just before 2300 GMT on Friday in Cardiff Road, Aberaman. A 34-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl are recovering in Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. Two local men are helping police with their inquiries.
Teenager is killed by car A teenager has died after being hit by a car in north Wales in the early hours of Saturday morning. The youth was struck on the A548 at Ffynnongroyw at around 0630 GMT. North Wales Police are appealing for witnesses to contact the Eastern Area Traffic Department.
Police name dead camper A German man who was found dead in a tent on a south Wales mountainside has been named by police. The remains of Frank Kruger, 35, were discovered in woods near Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil, on 3 January. Mr Kruger, who lived in London, had lain undiscovered for several months after being reported missing in July. South Wales Police identified Mr Kruger after checking dental records. A post-mortem examination has been carried out and police are not treating the death as suspicious.
Quiz show accused appears in court A college lecturer from south Wales, accused of cheating on the TV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire has appeared in court. Tecwen Whittock, aged 52, from Cardiff, who is head of Business Studies at Pontypridd College, appeared in a pre-trial hearing in London on Friday. He denies conspiring with Army major Charles Ingram in a plan to cheat their way to the jackpot. The trial of the two men and a woman, will begin in London later this month.
'Asylum seekers' held by police Police in south Wales are expected to question two men believed to be asylum seekers and a Spanish lorry driver. Officers were called to the Bosch plant on the Miskin Industrial Estate on Thursday night and detained the three men. The two thought to be asylum seekers are believed to be Iraqi. All three men were taken to Barry Police Station. Immigration officials and interpreters were expected to begin interviewing the men on Friday morning.
Kidney machine lorry catches fire An articulated lorry carrying a kidney dialysis machine caught fire on the M48 near the old Second Severn Crossing on Friday. Flames were seen coming from the trailer carrying the medical equipment in the early hours of the morning, and fire crews were called to deal with the blaze. Police said no-one was injured in the incident, and the road had been cleared.
Police inquiry over child's head injuries Police in Cardiff have launched a joint investigation with the city's social services into the injuries of a two-year-old girl, who is in a serious condition at the University of Wales Hospital. The youngster was admitted on 27 January suffering from head injuries. A woman aged 22 and a man aged 33, both from the Cardiff area, have been arrested in connection with the incident. The pair have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Two killed in house fire named Dyfed-Powys Police have named two people who died in a house fire at Maestir, near Lampeter, on Tuesday. They are Marie Ann Jenkins, 47, and her son Gareth Wyn Jenkins, 27. The cause of the blaze, which began in the early hours of the morning, is still being investigated.
German survives censure move The Deputy First Minister, and Rural Affairs Minister, Mike German has survived a vote of censure at the Welsh Assembly. The Conservatives proposed the motion following criticisms over delayed payments to farmers, and the way he had dealt with a report on genetically modified foods. Seven Tory AMs supported the motion but 32 other AMs voted against it. Plaid Cymru members chose to abstain. However, during the debate Labour AM Ron Davies called for the minister to resign, despite voting against the censure motion. In his reply, Mr German attacked the Conservatives for political point scoring. He said that rural development was a key commitment of the Assembly Government.
