It was established in memory of 35 Syracuse students who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Lockerbie Academy head teacher Graham Herbert expressed the school's shock at the news.

He said staff and pupils were absolutely devastated by Andrew's sudden death.

"Our thoughts are first and foremost with Andrew's immediate family," he said.

"Andrew was head boy at Lockerbie Academy during 2001/2002.

"He was studying in the United States with another student.

"Both were enjoying their time abroad and they were the 13th pair of students to make the trip as part of the Syracuse Scholarship scheme."
