Whistleblower speaks up
Kathryn Bolkovac exposed a scandal in Bosnia
In a HARDtalk interview on 16 December, Kathryn Bolkovac, UN whistleblower, meets Tim Sebastian.
When a fragile peace came to Bosnia in 1995, thousands of UN and Nato peacekeepers followed to help restore democracy and the rule of law. But allegations started to fly that some betrayed that mission by involving themselves in the trafficking of women who were forced into prostitution. Two years ago an American policewoman, Kathryn Bolkovac, working with the UN blew the whistle on these activities claiming that some UN staff were "buying" prostitutes as sex slaves. She was fired soon after, but recently her case was upheld by an employment tribunal in the UK. Meanwhile, the trafficking of women in the Balkans goes on - so were her efforts in vain?
