MLA warns of drug rape risks
Clubbers
Clubbers have been warned about drugged drinks
Christmas party-goers have been urged to be aware of the increasing danger of drug rape.

SDLP assembly member Patricia Lewsley warned that people should exercise caution when they are out socialising.

Earlier this year, police said the number of drug rapes being reported to them was rising steadily.

Mrs Lewsley said it was important for friends to stick together and watch out for each other.

Drink being spiked
The drug sedates victims
"Unfortunately drug rape is a growing concern in Northern Ireland with and estimated two cases per week being reported to the Rape Crisis Centre," she said.

"Pubs and clubs are the most common places for drinks to be spiked and the drugs are usually tasteless and odourless."

She added that the consequences for the victims could be horrific, resulting from a loss of inhibitions and severe loss of memory.

"Christmas is a time to enjoy yourself and I certainly would hate to spoil anyone's fun this year, but I do urge people as they are out at parties, pubs and clubs, to be aware of the risks of drinks being spiked and the consequences.

"It only takes a second to spike a drink, but the suffering it causes can last a lifetime."
