'Energetic community' named village of year
Villagers at Sutton celebrate the win
Sutton villagers are pleased with their win
A Cambridgeshire village has won the title of Village of the Year.

Sutton, near Ely, has been named the 2002 Calor Village of the Year for England and Wales, at a prestigious awards ceremony attended by HRH The Princess Royal.

Sutton carried off the category prizes for young people and information technology, before being presented with the ultimate accolade - and £6,000 in prize money - by The Princess.

Nearly 50 villages drawn from across England and Wales - from an original list of 1,500 villages - contested the final stages of this year's competition.

To be recognised as a vibrant, active, listening, communicative and caring village has meant a great deal to the residents of Sutton

Philip Peacock, parish chairman

In awarding Sutton the top prize, the judges said: "Sutton is a lively and energetic community which puts much thought and effort into maintaining first class facilities, and which is confidently looking to a positive and sustainable future."

Philip Peacock, chairman of Sutton Parish Council, said: "To be recognised as a vibrant, active, listening, communicative and caring village has meant a great deal to the residents of Sutton.

"We have taken tremendous pride in our achievement and, along the way, enhanced friendships and community spirit."

Calor managing director Howard Kerr said: "Sutton is a very worthy winner, demonstrating outstanding enthusiasm, a positive outlook and a caring attitude towards every member of its community."
