Two jailed for aiding police killer
Pc Malcolm Walker was thrown from his bike
Two men who helped steal a car which was later used to chase a police motorcyclist to his death, have each been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Emmanuel Benito Ebanks, 24, and Mekteal Naphtali, 21, drove convicted murderer Nicholas Walters to a garage in Birmingham where he took a car and drove off. Shortly afterwards, he repeatedly rammed Pc Malcolm Walker, throwing him from his motorbike and impaling him on a concrete bollard. Walters was jailed for life at Birmingham Crown Court for the murder of Pc Walker last month. Walked free Ebanks, of Raleigh Close, and King, of Sycamore Road, both in Handsworth, Birmingham, admitted stealing the Peugeot 406 from the Q8 petrol station in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham.
However Ebanks walked free from Northampton Crown Court on Monday after he was told he had already served a sufficient part of his sentence on remand. King, who was jailed for three years and nine months for drugs offences on 11 October, was sent back to jail and told his 18-month sentence would run concurrently. Sentencing the pair, Mr Justice Hunt said: "You will both be aware of the use to which Nicholas Walters put that motor car but that is irrelevant for the sentence I pass on you today. Sped away "You two are going to have to decide whether you are going to spend the rest of your lives offending and going into prison for longer and longer periods. The choice is yours." The court had heard Ebanks had first noticed a man walking in to the garage shop to buy cigarettes, leaving his keys in the ignition. He alerted King and they both got into the vehicle they had been driving while Walters jumped into the parked vehicle. The men sped away from the garage followed by Walters who minutes later, deliberately rammed into Pc Walker.
