In pictures: Gujarat goes to polls
People in India's western Gujarat state voted on Thursday to elect a new government. The polls were seen as a crucial test for the ruling BJP, and massive security was in place to prevent a repeat of religious violence which swept the state earlier in the year.
Turnout was high, with queues at polling stations
A massive security presence prevented trouble breaking out
Thousands of election staff were deployed
The incumbent chief minister is accused of whipping up anti-Muslim feeling
Special arrangements were made to allow displaced riot victims to vote
