Man charged with lawyer's murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of retired solicitor Christopher Scholey.

Gary Bradley appeared briefly before Leeds Magistrates flanked by two security guards.

The 35-year-old, of Trentham Place, Beeston, spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

He is accused of killing the 53-year-old solicitor on 30 September 2002.

Mr Scholey was found lying, fatally injured, close to railings in Cross Flatts Park in South Leeds, just a short walk from his home.

He had suffered several injuries including a stab wound to the heart.

Police launched a major murder investigation into his death.

The solicitor, who was taking his regular morning walk when he was attacked, retired through ill health in March from a firm of lawyers in Barnsley.

He had specialised in family and criminal law.

Mr Bradley was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday 18 December.
