Mudslides in the coastal resort of Angra dos Reis have killed at least 36 people, after torrential rainfall caused a river to burst its banks.

Two months' rainfall struck the area in two days

Fifty people are reported missing and 1,500 homeless

Rescue workers are still searching for survivors....

...but blocked access roads have hampered progress

Houses and shacks were buried under the rubble, and thousands were forced to flee

'There are areas where you used to see houses before and now there is nothing,' said a town spokeswoman

Half the town's 119,000 people lived in houses and shacks perched precariously on hills around the town
