The chairman of Carlisle United football club has confirmed to the BBC that he has been summonsed to appear before magistrates in Lincoln.

John Courtenay and a Carlisle player, Richie Foran, are facing public disorder charges following a touchline altercation in August.

The charges relate to events off the field during a Division Three game between Lincoln City and Carlisle at Lincoln's Sincil Bank ground .

Mr Courtenay and Mr Foran were allegedly involved in incidents around the director's box and by the players' tunnel.

Mr Courtenay is seen as Carlisle's saviour

Lincoln City compiled a report on what happened which included video footage, photographs and witness statements.

Lincolnshire Police say that a 52-year-old man from southern Ireland and a 22-year-old man from Carlisle have been summonsed to appear before magistrates in Lincoln on 13 January.

The hearing is just two days after Lincoln City travel to Carlisle United for the return fixture.

Carlisle won the game in August 1-0 with a 66th minute penalty despite having three men sent off.

Both clubs have faced financial difficult this year.

Mr Courtenay has been seen as the saviour of Carlisle after taking control in July, following a controversial 10-year reign by Michael Knighton.
