Day's jail for banned beggar
Daniel Hill

A drug addict who was banned from begging has been sentenced to one day in prison for defying the injunction.

Bristol City Council took out the court injunction against Daniel Hill last month as part of a £200,000 campaign to clear beggars from the city's streets.

But on Friday, Bristol County Court heard how police had caught the 23-year-old rough sleeper begging five times since the imposition of the order.

Judge Paul Bartlay decided to give Hill an opportunity to conquer his heroin addiction and sentenced him to one day's imprisonment.

Hill had spent Thursday night in a cell after being arrested for failing to attend the original hearing, so walked free as a result.

A spokeswoman for Bristol City Council said: "Daniel has agreed to seek treatment for his drug addiction so we have assigned him a dedicated drug worker.

"We are confident about the treatment - one woman who had this is now back in permanent accommodation and is drug-free."
