Garage versus pop at awards
Ms Dynamite
Ms Dynamite won this year's Mercury Music Prize
Award-winning UK garage newcomer Ms Dynamite will do battle with UK Pop Idol Will Young at the second Top of the Pops Awards on Friday.

The pair are nominated in three categories, including best newcomer. British guitar group Coldplay are also up for three trophies.

If Ms Dynamite takes home a clutch of awards, it will crown a triumphant year.

She was the surprise winner of the Mercury Music Prize for her album A Little Deeper.

Ms Dynamite - whose real name is Niomi McLean-Daley - also dominated 2002's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards.

The Top of the Pops awards, which celebrate the best in pop music, will be hosted by Ronan Keating at the Manchester Evening News Arena.

The winners are chosen by the public who can phone, text or e-mail to vote for their favourite artist.

Young, who won the ITV1 talent show Pop Idol in February, has also had a good year, achieving three number one singles, although his current release DOn't Let Me Down/You and I missed out on the number one slot last week.

His debut hit Evergreen is up for best single.

But Young will once again find himself doing battle with Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates at Friday's awards.

They will once again be competing against each other for top pop act and top newcomer.

Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head is up for best album, while the band, headed by Chris Martin, are also vying for top rock act and tour.

The Streets and former Neighbours star Holly Valance have also been nominated for top newcomer.
