A Scottish soldier has died in a car crash in North Yorkshire.

Jamie Douglas Henderson, from Eight Regiment Royal Logistics Corp, was one of two soldiers from Catterick Army barracks in a car that left the road and hit a tree.

The 22-year-old, from Falkirk, was trapped inside the grey Ford Escort after it caught fire, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other soldier was able to escape to safety.

Striking fire crew

A Peugeot car was also involved in the accident, but the driver from Reeth, North Yorkshire, was uninjured.

The crash happened at 1530 GMT on Thursday.

Both vehicles were travelling along the B6271 towards Great Langton near the junction with Thringtoft.

A striking fire crew from Northallerton joined a retained crew. A military Green Goddess also attended.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
