In quotes: World outrage over Kenya attacks
Hotel after bombing
The attacks are seen as a threat to the civilised world
Governments around the world have reacted with horror and concern to the bombing of an Israeli-owned hotel in the Kenyan city of Mombasa which killed at least 15 people, and the failed missile attack on an Israeli charter aircraft at a nearby airport.

US White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe:

The United States Government deplores this violence. We stand prepared to offer the governments of Kenya and Israel any assistance necessary in this investigation.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana:

These tragic incidents come as a sad reminder that no region in the world is immune from terrorist attacks.

UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw:

We have to be alive to the fact that there are appalling terrorists around the world, well-organised and sadly well equipped, capable of provoking this kind of outrage, and that is what they have done today.

French Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Bernard Valero:

France condemns with the greatest firmness these two attacks. In these painful circumstances, we express our sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims and to the Israeli and Kenyan authorities.

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer:

It is an attack designed to escalate the situation in the Middle East by killing innocent people.

Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi:

Anyone doing this is not representing the whole of Africa. We will do our best to fight the terrorists.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Yakovenko:

The tragic events in Kenya underline that the criminal activity of the multinational terrorist alliance poses a threat to the entire international community.
