What The Night Is For: Your views
The play is written by Michael Weller
Former X-Files star Gillian Anderson is the latest celebrity actor to star in a West End play.
Anderson performs opposite Robert Allam; the pair play a couple who resurrect their adulterous affair 11 years after it originally ended. "There is little chemistry between Allam and Anderson, and their kiss, which is meant to reignite the passion, was as uncomfortable to watch as it looked for them to perform," wrote BBC News Online's Keily Oakes. But what did you think? Is the passion missing? What did you think of the script? Or is it enough just to see the TV star live on stage? BBC News Online users had their say.
A fantastic play. Anderson is compelling as she goes through a range of emotions - joy, anger, calm and fear. In the last scenes your heart breaks for her. Allam is a joy to watch on stage - always so reassured and a perfect foil for Anderson. And their chemistry is extremely watchable.
The truth is on the stage. The poor lassie can't act.
A truly great performance! Compelling,a roller-coaster ride emotionally. A raw, touching performance by Gillian Anderson and a very competent one by Roger Allam. A play that comes very close to the bone! Any one who has been in the situation will recognise the agony, indecision and the heartbreak - go and see it! Don't pay attention to the reviews - it's truly a revelation!
Gillian Anderson has proved that she is a thorough washout. Allam was saving grace in the play, Anderson's every second was sheer disappointment. She should make more prudent career choices if she wants to retain her fame
This was a greatly entertaining play. Very simple and very effective. Having never watched the X files I was sceptical about how well Gillian Anderson could actually act and cope with such a role. But I was pleasantly suprised to find that Anderson's acting was amazing although she looked far too young for the part. Allum did seem to struggle to play up to her presence and there was a slight lack of chemistry between the two of them. However the script made up for all of that. Overall a brilliant play.
Saw the play while on holiday and this is what theatre is meant to be - entertaning, vibrant and well acted. Esoteric entertainment may please critics, but it is the patrons who fill the seats. This was worth a repeat viewing and truly a night of delightful entertaiment!
Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. I was completely enthralled. Anderson and Allam's chemistry is electric. Definitely a worth a repeat viewing.
A superb play, great performances from both Anderson and Allam. There is definitely great chemistry between both characters and very believable.
I have to say I really enjoyed the performance of What the Night is For. To see the intensity and range of emotions live on stage is amazing and something that you don't see much of today. Anderson and Allam worked perfectly together and off each other to create an electrifying performance to go with the sharp script.
Gillian Anderson's performance was brilliant and matched the standard of The House of Mirth. However, it didn't really feel like there was enough chemistry with Allam. There were some good lines in there and the set is fantastic. Enjoyable but something missing.
I recently went to see this play, now I wish I hadn't bothered. The play is an abomination. Gillian Anderson proves she can't act. No wonder nobody wants to work with her in Hollywood. Allam fares no better. Save your money and go and see Judi Dench's play instead.
The play has been pretty much slated and
I think the negative reaction is undeservedly strong. Perhaps this wasn't "groundbreaking" theatre but very few shows can truly claim that. The script contained several sharp one-liners which injected some good comedy into the proceedings and touched on a number of themes relating to infidelity.
A good solid play!
I went on the first night of the play and I was glued to the stage all night. It was fantastic. Anyone who thinks this play is boring should give up reviewing. Gillian is still the best
Give the lass some credit. At least she is trying something different from the role she has become identified with. I wonder how many of the so-called "critics" can act themselves?
Amazing performances by Anderson and Allam and an amazing play.
