Chissano's son summoned to court
Carlos Cardoso was investigating corruption cases
The judge in the murder case of journalist Carlos Cardoso has ordered the son of Mozambique's president to testify.
Three of the six suspects have told the court that Nhympine Chissano was behind the assassination which shocked Mozambique two years ago.
The murder, and the subsequent investigation, have highlighted the growing corruption in one of Africa's best performing economies. Mr Cardoso was investigating allegations that $14 million had disappeared from the main state bank at the time of his murder. He had also denounced other shady deals, some involving international drug deals. Mysterious escape The BBC's Jose Tembe in Maputo says that Nhympine Chissano, 33, is legally obliged to go to court. The judge did not specify when he should appear.
Judge Paulino has also ordered the appearance in court of Teresinha Mendonca, the mother of the key suspect in the case, Anibal dos Santos, who escaped from prison in September. His mother said that Mr dos Santos had been helped to flee to London in order to prevent him testifying. On Wednesday, the public prosecutor, Dr Mourao, requested that a Mozambican TV news interview with her be shown as evidence. In the TV clip, played to the court, Mrs Mendonca admitted that she knows her son is in London, and maintains regular contact with him. Two defendants say they gave money to Mr dos Santos, on the orders of Nhympine Chissano. In order to mark the second anniversary of Carlos Cardoso's death, the trial was adjourned last Friday. A road in Maputo was named after him.
