Milly's parents to run safety courses
Amanda Dowler and her mother Sally
Mrs Dowler said Milly was a "sensible girl"
The parents of Milly Dowler plan to run courses for teachers to help educate children about personal safety.

Bob and Sally Dowler also want to use cash raised from their fundraising to make a video advising youngsters about the dangers of abduction.

Their charity Milly's Fund aims to help youngsters by providing training and education in personal safety.

But Mr Dowler said children must be allowed to be independent.

We were asked by police if Milly was the kind of girl to get in a car with a stranger and we said no, she was a sensible girl

He said: "It's common sense, we're not trying to reinvent the wheel.

"The main message is that children should, and must be, able to be independent at a certain age and be aware of some of the safety issues."

The couple have been invited back to Amanda's former school to talk to teachers about their plans.

Mrs Dowler said their situation was very extreme.

She said: "We were asked by police if Milly was the kind of girl to get in a car with a stranger and we said no, she was a sensible girl.

'Evil men'

"We don't want to frighten children - we just want to make them aware strangers don't look like evil men but just like ordinary friendly people."

The couple said they had been contacted by lots of children with fundraising ideas for Milly's Fund.

The 13-year-old schoolgirl was abducted on her way home in March, in the Surrey town Walton-on-Thames.

Her remains were found two months ago in woodland near Fleet in Hampshire - 25 miles away from her home.

The couple have raised £40,000 for the fund so far.
