A woman who nearly died after suffering an ectopic pregnancy has given birth to a healthy baby girl.

Emma Stafford, from Shelthorpe in Leicestershire, had an emergency operation earlier this year to remove a foetus from her fallopian tube.

But nine weeks after the life-saving surgery at the George Eliot hospital in Nuneaton a scan revealed one of two twins she had been carrying had survived.

Baby Freya was born on Tuesday weighing seven pounds and one ounce.

Doctors had put her odds at surviving at about 50,000 to one.

Ms Stafford said: "She certainly wasn't supposed to be here - she proved them all wrong.

"I was extremely poorly after the ectopic pregnancy - I only just survived the surgery.

"To come out with something after all the pain that I went through and all the suffering the whole family went through... something like this is quite amazing."

Dr Suzy Matts, a consultant obstetrician at the hospital, said: "In a hospital of George Eliot's size we would only expect to see a case like this once in every 20 years.

"Obviously we were absolutely delighted when Emma continued with the pregnancy and has now had a health daughter."
