The victim is in an "ill but comfortable" condition in hosptial.

The police said a substantial sum of money was taken during the robbery on Wednesday.

Detective Constable Lorna Livingstone said it was a disgusting attack.

"The man answered a knock at his door. He lives alone in an isolated area of Garvagh," she said.

"He was confronted by two masked men. We believe they were armed, although we can't confirm that at this moment in time.

"They forced their way into the house and the man was subjected to a long and a very vicious attack.

'Very careful'

"The attackers demanded money and an undisclosed amount of money was given to them."

She added: "It must have been traumatic for him - this was an absolutely disgusting, vicious attack on the man."

The victim is in a stable condition in hospital and the extent of his injuries is still being assessed.

"You do not know who is at the door and people should be very careful when they are opening it."
