£3.6m pay-out after birth mistakes
The Shrewsbury Hospitals Trust accepted liability
A Shropshire schoolgirl, left severely disabled after series of hospital blunders during her birth, has been awarded £3.6m in compensation.
Eight-year-old Lucy Hopkins, from Howle near Newport, suffers from cerebral palsy and needs round-the-clock care. The pay-out was approved at the High Court on Wednesday. The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital NHS Trust had accepted liability 18 months ago. 'Independent life' Lucy's mother, Dr Joanne Hopkins, said the family was pleased with the settlement. She said: "A very large chunk of the money will go towards providing care for Lucy. "It will provide her with an income, meaning she's not going to be dependent on the state. "Our aim is to give Lucy as high a quality of life as possible and help her to live as independent a life as possible and this award, which is a large settlement, will help hugely in that aim."
