CCTV wanted to halt bad behaviour

CCTV cameras often overlook town centre areas
More than 1000 residents have called for CCTV cameras to be installed in Felixstowe, Suffolk, to tackle anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

They have signed a petition organised by local businessman David Woodmansie.

The request has been considered by Felixtowe Town Council.

Mr Woodmansie told BBC Radio Suffolk the problems were hitting tourism in the town.

"People like to come here because it's quiet, an old-fashioned seaside town, if you like.

"They're put off by this unsocial behaviour."

Proposal discussed

He said the biggest problems in the town were vandalism to businesses, anti-social behaviour, and drunkenness.

CCTV cameras were switched on this week in town centres, recreation areas, and car parks in Soham and Ely in Cambridgeshire to deter criminals.

A report released this year by the Home Office said cameras had little effect on violent crimes such as assault, but were useful for preventing property crime, including car theft and burglary.
